Fertilizer process
The fertilizer industry converts millions of tons of air, natural gas, and mineral ores into plant nutrition products based on the three basic nutrients nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. So how are fertilizers made?
Minerals such as potassium and potash are mined, while nitrogen is extracted from the air by reacting with natural gas. These elements are processed in manufacturing facilities and sent to various storage facilities before reaching fertilizer retailers, where they are blended in precise proportions for specific plants in specific regions. Fertilizer can be in solid, liquid, or gas form. It is transported over oceans, rivers, railroads, highways, or shipped through pipelines. This makes the fertilizer supply chain an incredibly elaborate network of suppliers, manufacturers, and distributors. So how does the system work?
Nitrogen (N)
For the largest product group, nitrogen-based fertilizers, the process begins with nitrogen from the air being mixed with hydrogen from natural gas at high temperatures and pressures to create ammonia. About 60% of natural gas is used as a raw material, while the rest is used to power the synthesis process. Ammonia is used to make nitric acid, which is then mixed to produce nitrate fertilizers such as ammonium nitrate (AN). Ammonia can also be mixed with liquid carbon dioxide to create urea. Both of these products can be further mixed with water to create a solution of UAN (urea ammonium nitrate).
Phosphorus (P)
PHOSPHORUS (P) Phosphorus-based fertilizers are produced from mined ores. Phosphate rock is first treated with sulfuric acid to produce phosphoric acid, which is then concentrated or mixed with ammonia to make various phosphate (P2O5) fertilizers.
Potassium (K)
Potassium is the third largest plant and crop nutrient. Potassium-based fertilizers are also produced from ores. Various chemical processes such as potassium chloride, sulfate and nitrate can be used to convert potassium rock into plant nutrients.
